Neck pain is a common, serious condition that can be for a brief period of time or long-lasting. Pain in the neck area (cervical spine) can seriously impact a person's daily life and can worsen over time. This condition, if untreated, can cause excessive wear and tear that could in turn lead to arthritis and degeneration of spinal discs and vertebrae and further discomfort.

There can be many underlying causes for neck pain. Contributing factors can include injuries or trauma, diseases, congenital problems, stress, muscle strains and ligament sprains and arthritis. It is not uncommon for small injuries that go unattended to worsen over time and result in major problems in the cervical spine. Examination and diagnoses by a board-certified physician should reveal the cause of your neck pain and present treatment options for relief.

Symptoms: The most common symptoms of degenerative disc disease are pain, numbness or tingling in the legs, an affected disc in the neck area may cause neck or arm pain. An acute, strong back pain may come and go, the pain can get worse with movements such as bending, reaching up or twisting, and typically lying down will relieve the pressure on the spine and provide some relief.

Treatment: Neck pain treatment is dependent upon the underlying cause of the discomfort. Common treatments for neck pain may include education - teaching patients spinal anatomy and basic body mechanics to help them manage their neck pain; physical therapy, exercise and stretching, ice and heat therapy, rest and/or activity modification, medications, injections and in some cases, surgery is required.

Common questions regarding degenerative disc disease: What are treatment options for degenerative disc disease? When will I be able to resume normal physical activities? What can I do to relieve the pain in my back? How long will it take for treatment to fix my back/neck? Where can I get treatment? Is surgery necessary? Are there stretching or exercises I can do to help relieve the pain? Can degenerative disc disease spread through the spine?
