Uniforms are essential for many jobs around the world. They say a lot about the type of work one does. In addition, they make a person look professional and competent in their work. Uniforms have been around for centuries and have evolved significantly to the uniforms that are available currently. There are different types of uniforms that are found in the modern world.

Paramedics tend to injured people in the streets before they reach hospitals and they have special uniforms called paramedic uniforms. They are made with two main objectives; to show professionalism and for protection. Mainly consist of a shirt and pants that are dark green, blue or black. This reduces visibility of dried blood and other body fluids. The main material used to make them is usually durable cotton.

People participating in manual labor jobs are said to be doing blue-collar jobs. The jobs include construction workers, miners, and electricians among others. Thick and highly durable cotton is usually preferred due to the demanding nature of the job. The blue color on most uniforms serves to conceal the dirt and stains that are associated with the job.

Jobs that are operated from an office are labeled as white-collar jobs. Many professions lie in this category and include attorneys and pharmacists. long or short sleeved shirts, pants, belt, tie and black shoes is usually the norm dress code for men. Dresses, skirts and blouses are the female equivalent. Suits also have emerged as a symbol for white-collar jobs.

Firefighters work in very hostile environments; without proper firefighting uniform, they may suffer serious injuries. Firefighter uniforms therefore have to be very resistant to high temperature and have to insulate fire fighter from the heat. Most consist of suspenders, cotton t-shirt, insulated pants, jacket and a helmet. This ensures fire fighters are well protected and hence can go about their business.

School uniforms are common to almost every school and learning institution in the world. They serve as identification badges for the different schools. Boys normally wear dark colored shorts or pants accompanied by a light shirt and tie. Girls have dark colored dress, or light blouses and a skirt as their norm. However, the dress code may vary from place to place.

Medical professionals wear nursing uniforms. They are made to identify the nurse and to uphold hygiene. A dress, apron and a cap is the more traditional look for a nurse. Scrubs have emerged as a more modern look for nurses. There has been a debate on whether to drop the traditional look for scrubs but with the recent influx of male nurses, more changes seem to be taking place.

Another type of special uniform is the sport uniforms. They are made for athletes and sport partakers. Their main objective is to distinguish players. Spectators thus can differentiate team members. They are ever changing to give athletes the best levels of comfort and performance. Therefore, uniforms should be respected since they form an integral part of the society.
