Why Not Asilah, Morocco?

Asilah Morocco (sometimes also referred to as Arzila) is located on the northwest part of Morocco, on its Atlantic coast. The biggest city nearest to it is Tangier, which is just around 50 km from it. This fortified town is known for its gates and ramparts that are still fully intact up to this day. Then town's long history stretches back to when Phoenicians made the town a trading base in 1500 B.C. In the 15th century, Asilah was conquered by the Portuguese, only to be abandoned in 1549 after the Portuguese king decided that it was an unnecessary expense for his kingdom, which at that time, was experiencing economic woes. In the late 17th century, under Moulay Ismail, the Moroccans took over the town, although it was also a known base for pirates who used the city's coast during the last part of the 19th century to the early parts of the 20th century. The town was part of Spanish Morocco from 1912 until 1956. Efforts to restore the town began in 1978.
Nowadays, Asilah Morocco is more famous as a resort. From Asilah leading to Tangier, inns, hotels, and apartment complexes populate the coast. Annual art and music festivals are still held in the town annually. A highlight of these festivities is a mural painting festival, with the winners displaying their works on the walls of the Medina, or the old side of the town for the next year. The Medina also features small shops with friendly shopkeepers who offer very affordable prices to their wares. If you want breathtaking sight, go to the ancient ramparts and watch the waves crashing to the rocks and cliffs.
Travelling to Asilah Morocco from Tangier by train takes around 45 minutes, but only runs a few times daily. While still in Asilah, be sure to visit its Mediterranean styled promenade just outside the old section of town. Try to plan your visit during the International Arts Festival and feast at the great choices of seafood restaurants near the beach. The beach may be crowded during the summer, so you might want to visit during off-season and experience more peace and tranquility.
